Sponsorship of the 3rd Sharks International Conference

Location: João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brasil

Partner: 3rd Sharks International Organizing Commission and ELO Eventos

Date: June 3 to 8, 2018

The Sharks International Conference is the first international event dedicated to elasmobranchs. The first two editions were held respectively in Cairns, Australia, in 2010, and in Durban, South Africa, in 2014. The meetings of the Sociedade Brasileira para o Estudo de Elasmobranquios - SBEEL (Brazilian Society for the Study of Elasmobranchs) have taken place twice yearly since 1997, and are the main forum for discussing research, conservation and stewardship of elasmobranchs in Brazil. The last edition was held in Penedo, Alagoas, in 2016. The AES (American Elasmobranch Society), founded in 1983, has held annual meetings since 1987, including one edition in Brazil (Manaus, Amazonas, in 2003). The last meeting was held in New Orleans, in the USA.  The Squalus Foundation, created in 2002, holds meeting every six months (Encuentro Colombiano sobre Condritios), the last one having taken place in Bogota, Colombia, in 2016. The 3rd Sharks International Conference, held in João Pessoa, Paraíba, together with the SBEEL meeting, the American Elasmobranch Society (AES) and the Squalus Foundation, from Colombia, brought together researchers and activists involved in the conservation of sharks and rays from around the world, enabling a huge exchange of knowledge and the establishment of partnerships. In addition to sponsoring the event, the Linha D’Água Institute brought the participants in some of the projects undertaken under the Linha D’Água Sharks and Rays call for proposal to present the results and the contributions their work has made towards achieving the targets set forth in the National Action Plan for the Conservation of Sharks and Sea Rays Threatened with Extinction.
