Support for the 1st Workshop on The Integrated Monitoring of Mangrove Swamps

Location: Cananéia, South coast of the state of São Paulo.

Partner: Fundação para o Desenvolvimento da UNESP – FUNDUNESP (UNESP Development Foundation).

Date: July 26 to 28, 2017.

Mangrove swamps form a fundamental ecosystem for the health of coastal and marine zones in Brazil, be it because of the shelter they provide for the reproduction and development of diverse species, or their role in the stabilization of the coastline, preventing erosion and flooding, as well as providing a variety of other environmental goods and services. The 1st Workshop on the Integrated Monitoring of Mangrove Swamps was organized with a view to conserving this ecosystem, specifically on the south coast of São Paulo. The event was organized by a group of researchers at UNESP Registro, in partnership with the Instituto Florestal. It was attended by researchers, conservation unit managers, public authorities and representatives of traditional local communities. The main objective of the workshop was to present the knowledge being generated in the region and to point out gaps and requirements for the São Paulo Lagamar. The participation of the different actors resulted in a serious debate which generated an extensive content of suggestions for addressing local problems. The event was supported by the Linha D’Água Institute, UNESCO Australia and the UNESP Development Foundation.
